ENDING RACISM – BUILDING ALLIANCES BETWEEN WHITE PEOPLE AND PEOPLE OF COLOR

A workshop led by Laura Sullivan

Racism is a pervasive oppression that hurts everyone, and our city is especially affected. This workshop will provide us with a chance to learn about the role of emotional hurts in installing and perpetuating racism, and will give us a chance to do some sharing and emotional healing around this important issue.

Topics to be covered include:

*the relationship between interpersonal and institutional racism
*the way that hurts experienced early in our lives relate to racism
*the role of internalized oppression, both for members of the oppressor group and for those targeted by racism
*the relationship between systemic (i.e. socioeconomic) issues and racism
*feelings of despair, hopelessness, grief, rage, and fear related to racism and to our anti-racism efforts
*particular challenges and opportunities of doing work to end racism in the South
*the historical context of racism in Memphis and how it still affects us

We want to illuminate the damage done to us by racism and the institutions that support it, with the ultimate goal of undoing this damage. The result of this work is a strengthening of our abilities to interrupt racism in our daily lives, to free ourselves from its effects, to take leadership, to form relationships across racial lines, to remove racism from our societies’ institutions, and to support the work of other individuals and organizations in ending racism.
